Hurricane Sandy and the contribution of volunteers

The impact and devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy has, quite rightly, been at the forefront of the news over the past few days. However, whenever such a disaster occurs it always amazes me how quickly people come to the fore, often risking their own safety, to help others in their community. We saw this after the riots in London last year and again now this has quietly been happening in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. To illustrate this I created a Storify to give you a small taste of the volunteer effort that has been going on.

I also discovered that helping volunteer at the clean up can be a great first date!  Thanks to Laura Stewart for this heads up.
