The Orphan Myth: Keeping Families Together

A new documentary from PBS has, once again, highlighted the problem with the institutionalisation of children across the world. The film explores why children, often with living parents, are put in to care centres. It also explains the psychological damage this often does to the children, why orphanages are expensive ways to raise children and how governments and NGOs are now trying to ensure that families stay together. Florence Martin, Co-Chair of Better Volunteering, Better Care, a group I’m a supporting member of, features.

The documentary also highlights the problems of well meaning international volunteers working in orphanages. Their presence can cause detachment issues with the children they interact with and the funds they provide means the multi-billion dollar industry continues.

Check out the documentary and let me know your thoughts.
